The Brief: How to get cast as a model for NYFW

Every September more models turn up than the year before, but the number of slots rarely changes. Two hundred walk into a casting, twenty walk out with it. Ahead of New York Fashion Week, I sat down with Creative Director of Fashion Week Forever and casting expert, Chris Lavish. He took me behind the scenes to explain what actually gets an aspiring model booked.

Every season the competition grows. Models flood in from across the country, and the world to book a limited amount of shows. Out of the hundreds that step in the door only a handful are selected. But what differentiates models that get the part? Is there anything you can do to improve the odds? And how early does the work really start? Ahead of fashion week this September, I sat down with Chris Lavish, casting specialist and creative director of Fashion Week Forever, to break down the do’s and don’ts of getting cast.

His answer kept coming back to one thing. “The models who book the shows aren’t the prettiest in the room,” he told me, “they’re the most prepared.” Beauty is the entry fee, not the prize, and preparation is the one part of the whole process you can actually control.

Prep

This starts long before you reach Manhattan, and it starts at home with footage. Lavish tells his models to study last season’s shows like homework. Watch the walks, note what worked and what didn’t, hone in on the small details and apply them. Last year’s footage lives on the Fashion Week Forever Instagram and on the CFDA page, and it’s the best place to start.

Planning starts earlier than the shows do. Castings kick off roughly a week or two before fashion week begins, so if you don’t live in New York, give yourself enough time to get into the city, settle in, and map out your calendar. Plan, plan, plan.

The other half of preparation is your schedule during the casting week. Expect six or seven castings in a day, and map the locations and timing in advance so nothing overlaps. Above all, don’t be late. “If you’re late to the casting, you’ll be late for the runway,” he says. Being early is part of the audition.

The Walk:

Once you’re in the room, the walk decides everything, and the call is made fast. Lavish says casters make up their minds almost immediately. The moment you finish, you’re sorted into a yes, a no, or, once in a while, a maybe pile which is held for editorial. This is why the walk can’t be something you figure out on the spot, it has to be automatic. His advice is blunt: practice up to four hours a day in the mirror. Then record yourself, watch it back, and find the exact moment you make a mistake. “Know where you went wrong,” he says as you can’t fix what you don’t know.

Come with two walks prepared, not just one. A soft walk and a hard walk is required, one is elegant and the other is full Balenciaga style, both need to be polished and different. This season the mood is leaning soft, especially in how you start, so pay attention to that starting pose.

Make sure you review the specs: for NYFW, Lavish’s guidance runs from 5’9”ft and up for women and a 6’ ft tall for men.

* You don’t need an agency behind you to be in the room. Freelancers get cast all the time.

The Uniform

Castings have a uniform that you should be familiar with and abide by:

• All black. Always. No exceptions, no “this season I’m switching it up.”

• Heels, always. A pair in your bag at every casting, no matter what.

• Form fitting. Casters need to read your lines at a glance, and close-cut black is the fastest way to let them.

Then there’s the comp card, which Lavish calls your handshake. Keep it to one sheet with everything on it: your social handles, your email, your basic stats, and a clean profile with the standard front, side, and three-quarter shots. You must have this printed. This is the point he hammers hardest: no AirDrop, no email from the hallway.

“At the end of the day, we look at the big pool of talent,” he says. “If you’re not on the table physically, you might get missed.”

A card that lives on someone’s phone doesn’t make the table. A printed one does. This is exactly where models can fall through the cracks.

Know the House

When you’re finally in the room, know exactly whose room it is. Know the show, the designer’s name, who you’d be walking for and why you’re there. Remembering the house, Lavish says, tells the house you take it seriously.

Where it Starts

The castings themselves show up across a few channels, so watch all of them. Fashion Week Forever posts its calls on Instagram, their website, and Substack, so subscribe to catch official castings and updates as the season builds. You’ll also find a flood of unofficial castings scattered across the internet. Double-check the source before you show up, and confirm whether it’s an official show or an unofficial production.

The Bottom Line

“You can go to the casting,” he says, “but can you get the casting?”

It comes back to the line Lavish keeps returning to, the one that separates the two hundred from the twenty.

Anyone can show up. Getting booked is a different sport, one built on hours in the mirror, a printed comp card on the table, a tight black fit, heels in the bag, and a plan for every hour of the day. Looks open the door. Preparation walks you through it.

The Fashion Brief: Did Emily in Paris predict Chanel Acquiring Charvet?

What? Chanel just acquired Charvet, France’s oldest shirtmaker, founded in 1838, a brand that has been independent for 188 years. No terms were disclosed yet, but the deal includes the shirtmaker’s six-floor building on Place Vendome. Chanel’s new creative director Matthieu Blazy’s debut a collection with Charvet in 2025 (a rare move, since Chanel almost never publicly collaborates with outside makers) and less than a year later the deal closed. If the plot feels familiar, it's because Netflix ran it first. The final season of Emily in Paris, released just months before the deal, is built on the same bones. Muratori, a family-run cashmere house that has made things the same slow way for generations, and JVMA, a luxury conglomerate circling with an offer. The parallel is real, a small atelier whose value is precisely that it never scaled, a giant that wants to own what it cannot replicate, and a succession crisis deciding the outcome. However, in the show, they didn’t end up selling to JVMA and let the succession continue in the family. Netflix wrote the version where the family finds an heir just in time. The story of Chanel and Charvet is what happens when there isn't one.

Who? On one side, Chanel, is the privately held giant that pulled in $19.3 billion in 2025 and answers to no shareholders. On the other, a family business run by two siblings in their seventies, the Colbans, with 40 people on Place Vendome and 60 in a workshop in central France with no direct heir. Charvet has dressed Proust, Churchill, JFK, and Coco Chanel herself, who bought their shirts for her love, Boy Capel. This isn’t just a brand buying a logo, it’s a major fashion house buying into a bloodline that embodies quality, luxury and creative control.

So? The deeper shift: luxury’s real arms race is no longer for customers, it’s hunting for craftsmanship, uniqueness and quality. Chanel has been quietly buying ateliers for years, from cashmere to millinery to silk, because rare hands are the scarcest asset in fashion. Charvet also hands Chanel a menswear answer, as its fashion president put it, there’s now a name for women and a name for men. The Colbans had no obvious succession plan, and that’s the tell, Europe’s heritage workshops seem to be aging out, and the houses that secure them now will own the meaning of “made in France” for the next century.

Plot twist in the smart-glasses wars: this week Meta dropped the Ray-Ban and Oakley names it borrowed for five years and launched its own brand, the Meta Adventurer and Meta Fury at $299, plus a $399 Kylie Jenner collab. Same camera and infrastructure as last year’s Ray-Ban Meta, $80 cheaper, now running Meta’s new Muse Spark AI. The software was never the question. The question is the logo. “Ray-Ban” sells because it’s been a known brand for the better part of a century; would you wear “Meta” stamped on your forehead with the same pride? We’re not so sure and that’s the whole gamble. Meta seems to want to be read as a fashion brand, not a tech company renting one as a vehicle, and it’s leaning on celebrity (hi Kylie) to get there, because the frame that wins isn’t the smartest, it’s the one that the fashion industry accepts and people actually wear.

Here’s the kicker though: nothing actually changed “under the hood.” EssilorLuxottica, the same conglomerate behind Ray-Ban and Oakley, still makes these glasses; Meta only dropped the name, not the maker. At the end of the day it’s all the same brand wearing different labels. Which is exactly what fashion should be interrogating right now: will this new Meta launch actually work? Can tech integrate itself into fashion with its current brand, or does it still need an established name to be taken seriously? Is “Meta” a brand people want on their face, or just one they’ll tolerate? Does a Kylie collab buy real desire, or just attention? The hardware war is basically over. The fashion war, is just getting started. Whose name belongs on your face? Can a tech brand build that kind of desire from scratch?

We’ve seen this movie before. Michael Kors put its name on a Google smartwatch and everyone was obsessed, but it was later discontinued. Google Glass made you a “glasshole,” gone. Snap’s yellow Spectacles were hyped for one summer, written off. The pattern feels almost too consistent to ignore: these things don’t seem to die because the tech is bad, but because nobody quite wants them on their face once the novelty fades. This makes Meta’s move feel like the boldest bet yet: just “Meta” on your face, cold, with only Kylie to lean on.

It is our pleasure to share the winners of our first New York Tech Week Fashion Hackathon in partnership with NYTW by a16z: Nicole Liao, Kim Dang, Reitwiec Shandilya & Rito

“Our team, Nicole, Kim, Reitwiec, and solo addition Rito, clicked almost immediately. Within minutes, we realized we were already speaking the same language through ChatGPT, Codex, and AI-assisted workflows.

Our first hurdle was spotty Wi-Fi, which forced us to brainstorm offline and define the project criteria by hand. Once reconnected, we used AI to pressure-test competing ideas. The feedback was messy at first, but after comparing the disagreements, the signal became clear: an event-based outfit coordination concept had the strongest hook.

As the idea expanded, we aggressively scaled it back into something demoable. Nicole had a PRD of the concept in ChatGPT, Reitwiec assessed workflow feasibility, Kim built out the UI prototype in Google Stitch, and Rito set up the GitHub repo while working toward a more functional AI-based demo the team could use live.

With time running out, we made the practical call to double down on the polished UI prototype and the clearest version of the story. During the presentation, Kim lead grounding the concept, and Rito framed it through the familiar chaos of group chats, outfit planning, and social coordination before an event.

What started as spotty Wi-Fi, competing ideas, and an unfinished AI demo became a winning pitch because our team kept turning chaos into signal.”

Standout Runway Moments: Designers delivered collections that balanced bold statements with refined structure. From dramatic silhouettes to modern tailoring, the season felt confident and intentional. Designers like Veejay Floresca brought theatrical flair and craftsmanship to the runway, while names such as Christian Siriano and Tory Burch leaned into strong femininity and elevated classics with contemporary edge.

Jordan Cohen

Jordan attended the Johnson School of Management at Cornell University and currently works in marketing at a financial firm in NYC. In the past she has worked on her own fashion brand and has stayed close to the fashion community.
